NOLA Kappa Philanthropy | STAIR

New Orleans Kappas are actively involved in philanthropy in our community. Local Kappas contribute to a better today and tomorrow through two annual events focused on children.

Each holiday season, our association hosts an annual Philanthropy Party. Alumnae bring donations of small toys, toiletries, and healthy treats to the event in support of SciTech Academy, a K-8 public school. These gifts are then used to improve attendance during the holiday season. The final weeks before school closes for the holidays tend to have the lowest attendance records for the year. SciTech uses the treats to encourage students to come to school. A daily raffle is organized where students who attend school have a chance to win. Attendance has improved through this program and the children are very excited when they win. Research has proven that each day a child is in school is a critical step in furthering their likelihood to graduate high school. Being in school insures that children are getting two full meals, being looked after, and forming important academic and social skills.

In the Spring, we focus on raising funds for a local eading non-profit at our Kocktails and Kamaraderie event. STAIR (Start The Adventure in Reading) is the beneficiary of this event. STAIR is a volunteer-based children’s literacy organization that provides reading tutors for public school 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade students. With a proven track record of more than 28 years, STAIR works one-on-one with students to improve their reading and language skills. These students are helped at a critical time when they are in danger of academic failure. This extra help allows their reading skills and confidence to improve rather than continue to deteriorate. STAIR depends on support from the community to provide this service at no cost to the student, family, or school.

This is our fundraiser for StAiR, our philanthropy project. Letters were sent out earlier last month about thier campaign to raise $30,000 before June 30, 2016. A donation from you would be MUCH appreciated.
